Kim Jung Gi was an accomplished South Korean illustrator, cartoonist, and manhwa artist known for his large, highly detailed drawings that were often created from memory. Inspired by Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump while in kindergarten, he pursued a degree in Art & Design at Dong-Eui University in Busan before serving in the Republic of Korea Army for two years. During his time in the army, he developed a strong visual memory that allowed him to accurately depict weapons, uniforms, and military vehicles in his illustrations. His first published work was titled Funny Funny and ran in Young Jump from 2002 to 2003. However, it was his sketch collections and live drawing demonstrations that made him most famous worldwide. Kim Jung Gi passed away in Paris at the age of 47 on October 3, 2022.
