In a time before he became known as Captain Levi of the Survey Corps, young Levi struggled to make ends meet in the Underground's garbage dump. As head of his own criminal operation, he relied on fellow criminals like Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church for support. With little hope for the future, Levi agreed to a deal with anti-expedition faction leader Nicholas Lobov, who promised citizenship aboveground in exchange for assassinating Erwin Smith, a Survey Corps squad leader.
As fate would have it, Levi and Erwin crossed paths. Impressed by Levi's agility and skill, Erwin offered him the chance to join the expedition team or face Military Police capture to atone for his crimes. The group then planned their mission to complete the assassination and secure a better future. However, they soon discovered that freedom in the surface world came with its own heavy costs.
