The Black Swordsman, once a mercenary known as Guts, seeks vengeance after a tumultuous childhood and finding someone he respected. However, this trust was shattered when the person took what was important to Guts for personal gain. Now marked for death, Guts is pursued by demonic beings while on a quest riddled with misfortune. Armed with a massive sword and monstrous strength, nothing can stop him from taking revenge until he finally confronts and defeats the one who took his humanity and that of his loved ones.

Berserk won the Award for Excellence at the sixth installment of Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2002.The series has over 40 million copies in print worldwide and has been published in English by Dark Horse since November 4, 2003.
