Shizuku Tsukishima is an energetic 14-year-old girl who enjoys reading and writing poetry in her free time. While browsing through the checkout cards of her books one evening, she notices that many of them are checked out by a boy named Seiji Amasawa. Intrigued, Shizuku decides to search for this boy who shares her love for literature.
On her way home from school, Shizuku encounters a peculiar cat on the train. Following the feline, she is led to an antique shop where she learns about "The Baron," a famous cat statuette. Surprisingly, she finds Seiji in the shop as well. The two quickly become friends and discover that they share a passion for literature.
While getting to know Seiji, Shizuku learns that he has a dream he would like to fulfill. However, she is uncertain about her own future and hasn't yet recognized her talents. Despite this, as their friendship grows, Shizuku becomes determined to work towards a goal. Inspired by the whispers of her heart and the legacy of The Baron, she resolves to carve out her own potential and dreams.
Mimi wo Sumaseba is the highest-grossing Japanese film of 1995. It is also the first Studio Ghibli film that was directed by someone other than Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, and the first Japanese film that used the Dolby Digital sound format.
