Gowappa 5 Godam

A group of five young individuals from Edo City embark on an exploration of a mysterious island and stumble upon Doctor Hoarai's secret mecha project, which he had been working on to defend Earth against an impending attack by a race of underground rock creatures. Despite being mocked by the scientific community for his predictions about this attack, Doctor Hoarai had anticipated it and created the Gordam fighting robot to aid in their defense. The young group decides to join forces with the deceased but mentally transferred doctor to pilot the vehicles and protect the planet. Thus, the Gowapper 5 Gordam team is formed under the leadership of Youko Misaki, who must lead her team in battling the hordes of subterranean rock creatures.

Gowapper was the first super robot anime to feature a female as the leader and main character. The concept of a group of young adults gathering to fight evil can be seen in other Tatsunoko works such as Science Ninja Team Gatchaman and in manga written by Tatsuo Yoshida and Ippei Kuri, but as of 2008, the only other Tatsunoko production featuring a female lead is Time Bokan 2000: Kaitou Kiramekiman. Gowappa 5 Gordam has a bright theme song and light-hearted situations, but the story also includes more serious parts, and there are episodes that end on a rather bitter note.(Source: Wikipedia)
