Naruto, Shikamaru, and Sakura were tasked with delivering a lost pet to a specific village when suddenly they found themselves under attack from troops led by the enigmatic knight Temujin. During the intense battle that ensued, the three of them became separated. After defeating Naruto in combat, Temujin challenged him to a final showdown on a high cliff. In the end, both fighters fell off the edge and met their demise. Meanwhile, Shikamaru was left behind and witnessed an astonishing sight when he saw a massive moving fortress appear before his eyes. Determined to understand the situation better, he infiltrated the fortress on his own but was horrified by what he discovered once inside.

Naruto Movie 2: Dai Gekitotsu! Maboroshi no Chiteiiseki Dattebayo! is set approximately after the "Sasuke Recovery Mission" arc of the Naruto anime series, which ends with episode 135. After its theatrical release in Japan on August 6, 2005, Naruto Movie 2: Dai Gekitotsu! Maboroshi no Chiteiiseki Dattebayo! became a direct-to-video film in the United States. It aired on Cartoon Network on July 26, 2008 and was released on DVD on July 29, 2008. The movie has an animanga adaptation released in Japan on March 3, 2006 and in the United States on November 4, 2008.
