Thunderbirds 2086 takes place approximately twenty years after the original series, which is generally accepted to have taken place around 2065. The animated series follows the adventures of a rescue team known as the Thunderbirds, who work for the International Rescue Organisation (IRO), an expansive federation overseen by the United Nations equivalent, the Federation. While there are no direct historical connections between the two series, it can be assumed that the original IRO evolved into its 2086 form over those thirty years. In contrast to the family-oriented and small-scale original International Rescue, the animated series portrays a larger team with various branches within the IRO. The Tracy family is not mentioned in the series. Most episodes revolve around natural or man-made disasters that the Thunderbirds must investigate and resolve. Unlike the original series, Thunderbirds 2086 features an ongoing story arc involving a breakaway independence group called the Shadow Axis, led by the enigmatic Star Crusher, who is heavily implied to be non-human and possibly an alien entity.
