Was it merely happenstance, or was it predetermined? ichigo gained his powers as a soul reaper through a chance encounter. as a substitute soul reaper in the soul society, he faced numerous challenges but overcame them with the help of friends. when new enemies and soul reapers appeared in karakura, ichigo returned to battle using his zanpakuto. meanwhile, the soul society noticed an increase in hollows being destroyed in the world of the living and received reports about missing residents in rukon district. the seireitei, home of soul reapers, was attacked by a group known as wandenreich, led by yhwach, father of all quincies. they declared war on soul reapers with a message that the soul society would be destroyed five days from now. finally, the long-kept secret history and truth about soul reapers were revealed as ichigo's final battle began.
The anime adapts the final manga arc, Sennen Kessen-hen (Thousand-Year Blood War Arc), which spans from the 55th to the 74th volumes.
