When kodaka hasegawa learns that he will be attending a new school, he is determined to make a positive impression and potentially form friendships. however, his efforts are thwarted when he is immediately labeled as a violent delinquent due to his physical appearance. despite the passage of time, kodaka remains isolated because of his notorious reputation. his life takes a turn when he encounters fellow outcast yozora mikazuki conversing with her imaginary friend in an empty classroom. after exchanging stories about their lonely high school experiences, kodaka and yozora decide to overcome the challenges of forming friendships together by establishing the neighbors club. the club's activities focus on developing social skills and fitting in, which they hope will enable them to make friends. they are joined by sena kashiwazaki, an eroge enthusiast, as well as other eccentric outcasts. through this club filled with humorous oddballs, kodaka may have finally found individuals he can call friends.
In 2012, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Portable, a visual novel by Namco Bandai Games for the Sony PlayStation Portable, was released.A live-action film based strictly on the novels and not the anime was released on February 1, 2014 and directed by Takuro Oikawa.
