Takashi Natsume, a timid youkai expert and master of the Book of Friends, embarks on a journey towards self-discovery with the help of friends both new and old. His closest ally is still Madara, a gluttonous wolf spirit who loves sake and is known as Nyanko-sensei when in cat form. While Natsume is briefly separated from Nyanko-sensei, he is kidnapped by a group of monkey-like youkai seeking the Book of Friends. Realizing that his "servant" has been taken away, Nyanko-sensei enlists the help of Natsumes friends and launches a rescue mission. However, the forest of the monkey spirits is filled with dangerous enemies, including the Matoba Clan, Natsumes old enemy. In Natsume Yuujinchou Shi, we see a return to a world of danger and friendship as Natsume confronts his past demons.
