Takashi Natsume and his spirit companion Madara continue their mission of returning names from the Book of Friends given by his late grandmother Reiko Natsume. On one day after school, Takashi encounters a lurking spirit named Monmonbou who recalls memories of his grandmother after hearing her name. This piques Takashis curiosity and leads him to explore a mysterious town where his grandmother used to reside. Along the way, he befriends Yorie Tsumura and her son Mukuo, uncovering more about his grandmothers past. Meanwhile, Nyanko detours for food and stumbles upon a suspicious "Spirit Seed" which magically sprouts into a fruit tree overnight. Driven by temptation, Nyanko consumes the fruit, splitting him into three. In an attempt to resolve this predicament, Takashi and his friends lend a helping hand, inadvertently unearthing more secrets that the town holds.
