The Shinsengumis Eighth Division was almost wiped out by an attack from a criminal gang called the Masked Demons. Only one survivor, Heisuke Toudou, remained critically injured. After being urged to rebuild the Shinsengumi by local feudal lord Katamori Matsudaira, Toudou decided to give eight convicts the chance to redeem themselves. They had to abandon their old names and become substitutes for the eight Shinsengumi captains. All but one accepted this offer. The one who refused was immediately executed by a former assassin named Sakuya. However, Toudou struggled to transform these seven reformed criminals into loyal servants due to his lack of discipline. One of them, Ichibanboshi, whose family had been killed by the Masked Demons, threatened the success of Toudous strategy with his impulsive and vengeful nature. Meanwhile, other factions such as Kogorou Katsuras group were putting their plans in motion to seize power at the end of the Edo period.

In celebration of Bucchigire!s premiere, Tokyo Tower held a collaborative event between July 8, 2022, and August 21, 2022.The series was released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on October 26, 2022.
