After losing his parents, Shinpei Ajiro lived with the Kofune family and their two daughters, Mio and Ushio. Although he later moved away to Tokyo for further education, he returned after Ushio drowned during a rescue attempt. During her funeral, his best friend informed him of bruises found on Ushios neck, which raised suspicion about her death's cause. Suspicious of foul play, Shinpei reevaluated recent events, but more strange occurrences unfolded. Missing individuals and inexplicable phenomena prompted Mio to remember an ancient folktale involving "Shadows," entities that may not be entirely imaginary. According to the tale, encountering one's Shadow predicts impending death. Facing the grim reality of Hitogashima Island, Shinpei resolved to fulfill Ushios last wish-to safeguard Mio.
