Leo, a white lion born on an ocean liner that crashed on a city shore, spent his childhood learning human customs and language. However, he felt incomplete without his family, home, and sense of belonging. To find these things, Leo journeyed back to Africa where he became determined to become the King of the Jungle. Leo's adventure involves finding peace between humans and animals who compete for space and resources. As he grows older, Leo must navigate both the harsh environment and dangers from other animals and hunters. Only through communication and mutual understanding can conflict be resolved. Leo's knowledge of human culture may prove crucial in bringing harmony to the jungle. The story of Jungle Taitei follows a young lion's struggle for survival in a dangerous land.

Jungle Taitei was the first full-color anime to air on TV. The series originally aired on Fuji TV, and has since been broadcast under various titles all around the world. The episodes were taken out of order when the anime was brought to the United States, which was reflected in the American VHS versions of the anime. Due to their many similarities, Jungle Taitei is largely believed to have influenced Disneys The Lion King, although Disney denies any relation between the two.
