Dr. Azuma developed numerous robots for humanity's benefit. Unfortunately, during a lightning strike on his lab, one of his creations, BK-1 or Braiking Boss, was corrupted. He renamed himself and declared that humans would now serve him instead of the other way around. With other malfunctioned robots at his command, Braiking Boss formed an army determined to enslave humanity. Tetsuya, Dr. Azuma's son, requested his father to transform him into a resilient android so he could destroy the threat that his own creation had unintentionally caused. Not long after, Braiking Boss captured both Dr. Azuma and his wife. In response, Tetsuya, now known as Casshern, teamed up with Luna, their robot dog Friender, and other allies to turn the tide of war and save his parents from Braiking Boss's clutches.
