Kanji Sasahara is a college freshman who feels like he doesn't quite fit in anywhere. During one of his explorations on campus, he discovers the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture-also known as Genshiken-a club that brings together all aspects of otaku culture. His first visit to the club does not go well because Harunobu Madarame, a senior member, makes him feel ashamed of his otaku interests. However, after befriending Makoto Kousaka, who is an avid otaku despite his appearance, Sasahara becomes more involved in Genshiken's activities such as watching anime and reading doujinshi. He also meets other individuals like Saki Kasukabe, the girlfriend of Kousaka, who tries to change her boyfriend into a "normal guy." While Saki struggles with understanding otaku culture, Sasahara enjoys his time at Genshiken and gradually accepts his love for otaku lifestyle.
