Humans have journeyed to distant stars and encountered various extinct alien civilizations on planets like Solo. Now, for the first time, humanity has come across a living species - the Buff Clan. When Karala Ajiba, daughter of the Buff Clan's military leader, lands on Solo, her people launch an attack to retrieve her. To escape, Cosmo Yuki, Kasha Imhof, and Bes Jordan climb onto three trucks that transform into the giant humanoid robot Ideon. After the settlement is destroyed, survivors board the recently discovered spaceship known as the Solo Ship and flee, trying to outrun the Buff Clan. Despite their efforts, the relentless aliens continue their pursuit and will not stop until they catch up with the humans.

The series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix Award in 1980.
