At Shinsei High School, soccer is almost like a combat sport, with new team coach Teppei Matsuki being a fully paid-up sadist who will stop at nothing to win. Despite this, headstrong school bad boy Shingo Tamai and his friend Ohira refuse to be bullied into joining Matsukis team and instead set up their own squad. Initially playing just for fun, they struggle to keep up with Matsukis team but as their skills progress, they play other teams and become stronger and more strategic. Eventually, they face off against the crack Asakase High School squad and its star player Misugi Yan in the schools final. The story is filled with subplots involving old rivalries, injuries, and a mixed-race player seeking his identity and his lost mother (who turns out to be in jail). Shingo develops into a skilled center forward and looks forward to playing against a visiting Brazilian squad. However, he suffers a serious injury in a game but recovers with the help of a friend of his old rival Matsuki. This is the first in a line of Japanese soccer soaps that includes Captain Tsubasa and beyond. The series is based on a manga by Ikki Kajiwara and Kosei Sonoda.
