In its original Japanese airing, Dairugger XV was initially conceived as an exploration robot and a peacekeeping force. At that time, Earth was experiencing prosperity. The president of the Terran League launched a mission to explore beyond the galaxy. After commencing its exploration, the starship Rugger-Guard was attacked by a ship from the Galbeston Empire. In response, Dairugger, the super robot, was deployed to defend Earth. Fate would have it that they must assist the people of Galbeston in finding a new planet before it exploded and liberating it from its tyrannical emperor. Unlike the U.S. version, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, there is no connection between Dairugger and King of the Beasts GoLion in the Japanese storyline.
There are three assault teams known as Land, Air, and Sea, each consisting of 15 parts collectively referred to as "Rugger." The design of these Rugger units was inspired by the sport of rugby, requiring 15 players to form a rugby union. In contrast, the U.S. version renamed the "Galbeston Empire" to "Drule Empire," and made significant edits to remove violence and sexual content to ensure general audience safety during broadcast.
