The narrative takes place in an alternate reality set in 1996, where humanity has advanced enough for long-range space travel and has established bases on both the moon and mars. despite the end of the cold war tensions between the united states and the soviet union, they have escalated as both sides build military facilities in space, with the threat of nuclear conflict looming over humanity. on mars, an exchange program created by the un to promote peace and understanding is about to begin, with 16 students and their instructor elizabeth arriving at the un base. among them is anna, a 14-year-old girl who serves as the narrator for the story. suddenly, four unidentified humanoid robots known as super powered tracers are detected in combat with each other, and the un base is caught in the crossfire, resulting in its destruction and killing all but six members of the "cosmic culture club" - elizabeth, arthur, roan, david, simone, and anna. as the battle ends, the last spt lands next to them, revealing a pilot who declares that earth is at stake.
