In the midst of towering steel pipes, tangled power lines, and dim neon lights lies a game that kids dare to play amidst the ruins of an old city. This is "Otokoyo," a clandestine hide-and-seek game where all participants wear fox masks and commences only when seven individuals have gathered. However, this isn't your typical game as those who partake in it vanish without a trace. Some speculate it to be the doing of demons, but that is merely conjecture... or perhaps not? "Kakurenbo" follows the journey of seven children as they embark on their first game of Otokoyo and uncover the reason why playing this game means never coming back.
The film won the award for Notable Entry in the General Category at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2005. In Korea, it received a Best Film Nomination at the Seoul Comics and Animation Festival. It then went on to win Best Short film at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal.
