Following a routine search, rookie sky pirate coud stumbles upon an unexpected item in his crew's cargo hold - ren, an "edel reid", a highly valued race among humans for enhancing their combat abilities through "reacting". upon further examination, coud realizes that ren is even more valuable than he initially thought. the pirate ship attracts the attention of three members from the edel reid complete protection agency "arc aire" who attempt to purchase her. however, when coud declines their offer, the ship comes under attack by an unknown source. in response, coud's captain assigns him the responsibility of protecting ren.
