In 1995, tsuyoshi takahashi, a sixth-grade student in eastern kobe, had high aspirations for attending a prestigious private school. his parents and younger brother lived with him. he spent most of his time studying, but he resented having to give up his free time when asked for favors by others. on january 17th, at early morning hours, a massive earthquake struck kobe city. tsuyoshi's family escaped their shattered home and went to school. they learned valuable lessons about communal living, rationing, and the selfless actions of volunteers during this time.

Chikyuu ga Ugoita Hi is based on Etsuko Kishikawas 1996 childrens novel of the same name, which is set during the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake in Kobe. It was Japans worst earthquake in the 20th century after the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake.
