Masaya Aoyama was supposed to have a romantic date with Ichigo Momomiya, but instead of ending in romance, Ichigo fell asleep after seeing a vision of a cat entering her body. The next day, she exhibited feline behaviors such as an intense craving for fish. When Masaya was attacked by a monster, Ichigo discovered that she could transform into the magical girl Mew Ichigo. She saved him and was approached by two researchers named Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka who revealed they had injected her with Iriomote Cat DNA to create a magical girl capable of saving the world from aliens. However, saving the world proved too much for Ichigo alone, so she learned that there were four other girls like her, and now she must find them before the aliens take over the planet completely.
Tokyo Mew Mews anime adaption was created by Studio Pierrot and Nippon Animation, first airing in Japan on TV Tokyo and TV Aichi. 4Kids handled English localization and was also only able to license and dub the first 26 episodes of the series.
