The American Civil War has just begun, and Mr. March, a doctor with four daughters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy - goes off to fight. Meanwhile, Mrs. March is left alone at home with her girls. As they get to know their neighbor, Mr. Lawrence, initially fearing him but also his grandson Laurie, who is just nine years old. The family experiences various trials and tribulations, some happy and others less so, all while the backdrop of war looms in the distance. They hope that their father will return safely from battle.
