After losing her mother in a car accident at nine years old, Melmo is left to take care of her two younger brothers. This task proves too difficult for her age and resources. However, during her grief, she is visited by the ghost of her deceased mother who gives her a bottle of miraculous candy that can transform her into an adult (blue candy) or an infant (red candy). Additionally, combining both colors can reduce her to a fetus and then change her into any animal she imagines. Melmo uses this seemingly endless supply of candies to solve the problems that arise, with assistance from her younger brother Toto (who accidentally turns into a frog in episode 7) and her grumpy mentor, Dr Nosehairs.
A "renewal" version with touched-up animation and a completely different cast was broadcasted by WOWOW and Tokyo MX TV in 1998 and 2006, respectively.
