In 2065, Earth has undergone significant changes from its past state. Dangerous alien creatures known as Phantoms have emerged on the planet, and contacting them is lethal, either instantly or through a prolonged decline. To protect what remains of humanity, force-field barriers have been constructed around certain cities to keep the Phantoms at bay. Scientists Aki Ross and her mentor Dr. Sid are seeking a permanent solution to this invasion by investigating Gaia energy, which can eliminate the presence of Phantoms on Earth. The human council and Deep Eyes military squad are also ready to assist in their quest. However, not everyone is convinced of this plan. Aki, Sid, Grey, and their allies must work together against both alien and human enemies if they hope to restore peace to Earth. While the Phantoms may seem like the more dangerous enemy, they will soon discover that their human adversaries are also not to be underestimated.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was the only full length film produced by Square Pictures. The movies final budget was $137 million dollar budget, due to the high costs of the technology being used for the films computer animation. With marketing costs included, The Spirits Within lost in excess of $94 million. Adjusted for 2016 inflation, this amounts to over $126 million. Not only did this directly lead to the closing of Square Pictures, but it also delayed the parent company Square from completing its planned merger with the video game publishing company Enix.A Japanese/American collaboration, The Spirits Within was filmed in English and premiered in the United States two months before releasing in Japan.
