Julie Braun is an 11-year-old girl living in the beautiful mountains of Southern Tyrol, Austria. Her parents are killed by Italian soldiers, leaving her to live with her relatives, the Clementes, in Vienna. Although she befriends cousins Johan and Tanya, Julie struggles to adapt to life with Uncle Karl and Aunt Klara. As Austria becomes embroiled in World War I, Karl loses his job at a glass factory, forcing the family into difficult circumstances.
