In 1945, during the summer in Hiroshima, a young girl named Nobuko discovered a starving kitten that was being attacked by crows. She wanted to keep it, but her parents were not receptive to the idea. Eventually, she managed to convince them to let her have the cat. Nobuko and her brother Makoto decided to name him Kuro. The addition of Kuro brought a great deal of happiness and amusement to the family. However, as World War II intensified in Japan, it became increasingly difficult for Nobuko and her loved ones to provide for Kuro's needs. On one August morning, Kuro exhibited strange behavior that caused concern among the family.
