A researcher named Mutsugoro travels with his family to a secluded island in Hokkaido for the purpose of studying its wild bear population. Despite facing challenges from nearby hunters, he encounters an orphaned bear cub during his stay and decides to take it under his care. The family adopts the cub and names him Donbe.
