In Heaven, it is decided that at thirteen years old, Yuki's grandparents believe she should go to an Earth village torn apart by bandits. If she fails to save its people within a year, she will become as insubstantial as the wind. Upon arrival, Yuki befriends a group of orphaned children whose parents were killed by the bandits and now survive through begging. She impresses them by taming Blizzard, the wild horse. With her help, the orphans and farmers unite against first the warring bandits and then Goemon, the avaricious lord who owns the region. Finally, Yuki faces her greatest challenge when the furious Demon God living in the volcano emerges to destroy those beneath.
