In 19th century france, a single mother named fantine leaves her three-year-old daughter cosette in the care of new acquaintances, the thernadiers. however, these caretakers turn out to be abusive and force cosette into servitude. despite this, she remains hopeful that one day she will reunite with her mother. during a nighttime errand for her hosts, cosette is assisted by an honorable stranger named jean valjean. after conversing briefly, he recognizes her as the person he has been searching for and rescues her from the thernadiers. they escape to a nearby town where cosette enjoys a new life thanks to jean's guidance. with his help, she vows to assist others who have suffered like she did and work towards healing france from the devastation caused by the french revolution. though their journey will be fraught with challenges, this idealistic girl remains determined to bring about positive change in her beloved country.
