A goldfish escapes from home and hitches a ride on a jellyfish. the fish gets trapped inside a jar and is eventually freed by a young boy named sousuke, who lives near the sea with his mother lisa while his father koichi works at sea. after healing sousukes finger wound with her tongue, the goldfish is given the name ponyo by her new friend. however, ponyo already has a family and a name - brunhilde - and a father named fujimoto, who is a sorcerer living underwater. fujimoto desperately searches for his daughter and captures her when he finds her. ponyo then rejects her birth name and declares that she wants to become human. using the power from sousukes blood, she grows limbs and escapes to the surface once more. but doing so disrupts the balance of nature in the ocean, causing the moon to fall out of orbit and the tides to grow stronger. in order to restore order and allow ponyo to live as a human, sousuke must pass an ancient test.
