In the story's backstory, an asteroid named Thanatos was heading towards Earth 20 years before it began. Due to Pluto's destruction, the asteroid became temporarily stagnant. To prevent Earth from being destroyed, the International Solarsystem Development Agency (ISDA) worked on the "D-Project" and created the Dragonaut after discovering a dragon egg under the ocean. The primary purpose of this weapon was to destroy Thanatos when the time came. However, they soon realized that the asteroid wasn't their only threat as powerful dragon-like creatures appeared on Earth, bent on destruction. After witnessing a murder by one of these creatures, Jin Kamishina, an 18-year-old boy who lost his family in a shuttle accident two years ago, became involved in the mysteries of the dragons and was chosen as the pilot of the Dragonaut. Toa, a mysterious girl who saved him from falling to his death after the creature attacked him, helped him on his journey. As they delved deeper into the secrets of the dragons, they encountered new friends and enemies and developed a closer relationship.
