Tistou is an eight-year-old boy who struggles with staying awake during school lessons. His father decides to continue his education by observing real life, starting in the garden with Mr. Moustache, a gardener. To his surprise, Tistou discovers he has a remarkable ability-the green thumbs: everything he touches grows into beautiful plants. He then learns about "order" from Mr. Turnbull, the manager of his father's armament factory. Over the next few days, Tistou visits various places in town to learn more, including the prison, slums, and hospital. He tries to make the world a better place with his new extraordinary power. Eventually, he learns about war and discovers that his father's factory supplies weapons to two countries at war.
