17-year-old Jirou Azuma leads a peaceful existence alongside his grandfather, utilizing his gift for communicating with animals to forge bonds and safeguard them. Both Jirou and his grandfather are descendants of a storied shinobi clan, honing their combat skills to preserve the ancient art of warfare within their family lineage. However, Jirous tranquil existence is disrupted when he rescues a seemingly ordinary black cat named Ragou, only to discover that the feline is actually a mononoke - a malevolent spirit that has long waged war against humanity. When a hostile mononoke seeks Ragou, Jirou employs his shinobi training to shield the cat, but sustains a mortal injury in the process. At this critical juncture, Ragou faces a dilemma: should he consume Jirous dwindling energy to replenish himself or bestow his remaining vitality upon the boy to restore him? In the end, Ragou chooses the latter option, resurrecting Jirou while imbuing him with extraordinary supernatural abilities that complement his own shinobi fighting style. This remarkable event is witnessed by Ryousuke Shiba, an officer in the Bureau of Espionage whose mission involves dispatching aggressive mononoke. Shiba extends Jirou and his grandfather an invitation to join the Bureaus new squad, Black Torch, where they can assist in combating powerful mononoke who threaten innocent people.
