Takashi Natsume has a unique secret involving youkai. Unlike other fifteen-year-old boys who may have secrets related to girls, Natsumes secret is terrifying and involves being constantly chased by these supernatural beings. This is because Reiko, his deceased grandmother, passed on the Yuujinchou, or "Book of Friends," which contains the names of spirits she controlled. Now in Natsumes possession, this book gives him the power to control these enraged youkai who seek their freedom. Despite being without parents and a loving home, Natsume is determined to find solace and belonging. His only companion is Madara, a self-proclaimed bodyguard who is also a feline spirit with his own motivations for sticking with the boy. This series, based on Yuki Midorikawa's critically acclaimed manga, offers an unconventional and supernatural take on slice-of-life storytelling as Natsume and Madara work to free spirits from Reikos contract.
Natsume Yuujinchou was licensed for an English release as Natsumes Book of Friends by NIS America, Inc. It was released October 9, 2012 as a Season 1 and 2 DVD Premium Edition followed by a DVD Standard Edition release February 4, 2014. It is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
