In 1945, american forces arrived on okinawa. the japanese fought a guerrilla war against them, and young ryuko was forced to flee with her family. her mother and sister were killed, leaving ryuko alone on the island. she eventually found safety in caves occupied by the japanese. however, she witnessed the japanese troops committing suicide there. this story is based on a children's book written by akira aratagawa and hikuji norima, which was inspired by footage of an okinawan girl named tomiko higa waving a white flag at the island's surrender.
