Following her encounter with a traveling prince who provided comfort after the loss of her parents, Utena Tenjou made a vow to become a prince herself. The prince only left her with a ring featuring a distinctive rose emblem and a promise that they would meet again in the future. Later on, Utena enrolled at Ootori Academy where she was drawn into a perilous game. Competitors who possessed rings similar to hers battled for a valuable prize: the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya, along with her unique abilities. When Utena emerged victorious in the duel, she came to understand that if she wished to liberate Anthy and uncover the enigmatic mysteries surrounding Ootori Academy, there was only one course of action: to revolutionize the world. Shoujo Kakumei Utena combines surrealist elements with intricate allegories and metaphors to produce a distinctive coming-of-age narrative that explores themes such as idealism, illusions, adulthood, and self-identity.
Childhood idealism, illusions, ambition, adulthood, sexuality, abuse, incest and identity are all prominent themes which are explored in what is essentially a highly metaphorical and symbolic coming-of-age story. Loss of innocence, both sexual and otherwise, is treated as a life changing event. Fairy tale archetypes such as the noble prince and the damsel in distress, as well as standard tropes of the shoujo and magical girl genre are incorporated, subverted, inverted, averted and deconstructed.Shoujo Kakumei Utena won the Best TV Animation Award at Animation Kobe in 1997.
