A high school student named Yukiteru Amano feels lonely and spends his days writing in a diary on his phone while talking with two imaginary friends, Deus Ex Machina and Murmur. One day, Deus reveals himself as an actual entity and gives Yukiteru a "Random Diary," which shows highly detailed entries based on the future. This leads to a bloody battle royale between Yukiteru and 11 other holders of similar diaries, with the last person standing becoming the new god of time and space. To survive, Yukiteru teams up with his stalker Yuno Gasai, who is also in possession of such a diary. However, there may be more to Yuno than meets the eye, as she could have other plans for her unrequited love.

Mirai Nikki also spawned a live-action television show with a different plot from the manga and anime, as well as a visual novel.
