A young boy named Tooichi finds an old lamp while playing outside. His grandfather discovers this and scolds him for taking something valuable outside. The grandfather then tells the story of how a small Japanese town was transformed by Westernization. In his youth, the grandfather's father made a living doing errands and chores for the townspeople. After witnessing Western lamps in another town, he became fascinated with them and began to study their technology. This passion led him to become a lamp maker, changing not only his own life but also that of the entire town.
The Agency of Cultural Affairs of Japan invested 214 million yen ($2.26 million) in "Young Animator Training Project" and entrusted the execution of the project to Japan Animation Creators Association (JaniCA).
