In 2022, quantum computing technology has advanced significantly, leading many individuals to transfer their minds into virtual reality known as cyber space. Shiki, Remus' sister, skipped grades and enrolled in Okinotori-island Mega Float City (OMFC) high school at the age of 14. One day, she confessed to her brother via Skype that she was communicating with him directly from cyber space, stating that her physical body had been kept in a water tank filled with a culture medium called "body pool." Remu was taken aback but accepted Shiki's decision until an event known as "Early Rupture" occurred. The network server became overloaded, causing users to lose their minds in cyber space and leaving behind soulless bodies in the body pools. To retrieve Shiki's mind, Remu visited her apartment in OMFC and encountered a woman claiming to be Shiki but who had actually taken control of her sister's body. As Remu tried to understand the situation, a violent attack struck the apartment.
