Once a celebrated warrior in the Aizu Domain, Shizuma Origasa now struggles financially after his homeland's defeat against the new imperial government. To make ends meet, he works as a rickshaw puller in Tokyo. Despite this, he continues his search for his missing fiancée, Sumie Kanomata, whose safety was entrusted to him by her brother Gennosuke before his death. After thwarting an assassination plot, Shizuma is recruited by the police force, which he uses as a platform to pursue Sumie further. However, his investigation leads him into a complex web of political conspiracies involving government loyalists, rebellious factions, manipulative courtesans, interfering foreigners, and even a mysterious yakuza member, Kyoushirou Shuragami.
