The movie is an adaptation of a story in Chinese mythology, specifically from the epic fantasy novel Fengshen Bang, about Nezha, a warrior deity. After 3.5 years, Lady Yin gives birth to a flesh ball that becomes a lotus flower and leads to Nezha's birth. Nezha is born able to walk and talk and starts studying under the immortal Taiyi Zhenren. However, the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas have become cruel and destructive, causing storms and drought in China. The people beg for rain, but Ao Guang ignores them and sends Ye Sha to capture children for him to eat. Nezha's friend is captured by Ye Sha while bathing near the ocean. Nezha confronts his friend and injures him badly. Ao Guang then sends his third son, Ao Bing, who is killed by Nezha. This leads to various conflicts between Nezha and Ao Guang. The Dragon Kings wreak havoc on the people, causing storms, floods, and other natural disasters. Seeing this, Nezha takes his father's sword and tells his parents that he is returning their flesh and bones to them before committing suicide by slitting his throat. He is reborn with help from his master and given new weapons and abilities. Nezha then confronts Ao Guang and the other Dragon Kings in their underwater palace, ultimately triumphing over them.
