The statement "God has abandoned the world" implies a belief system where God is no longer present or active in the world. This leads to the consequences of life being unable to end and new life not being born, with the "dead" walking restlessly among the living. To address this issue, God created "gravekeepers," mystical beings who can lay the dead to rest through proper burial. A young girl named Ai serves as her village's gravekeeper in place of her late mother. One day, a man known as Hampnie Hambart arrives and kills everyone in Ais village. With no plans for the future and having lost everything she knew, Ai decides to accompany the mysterious man on his journey. As she travels across the land, Ai strives to fulfill her duties as a gravekeeper, bringing peace to the dead and assisting the living. At the same time, she learns more about the world that God left behind in this tragic state.
