Mirai Kuriyama is the last member of her clan of Spirit World warriors who possess the ability to wield their blood as weapons. Her mission is to hunt down and eliminate "youmu," which are said to be manifestations of negative human emotions. While pondering on the school rooftop, she encounters Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed youmu in human form. In a moment of panic, Mirai stabs him with her blood saber, only to discover that he is an immortal being. Despite this revelation, their friendship develops around Mirai's ongoing attempts to kill Akihito as she tries to boost her confidence as a Spirit World warrior. Eventually, Akihito convinces her to join the Literary Club, which houses two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase. As their bond grows stronger, so does the intensity of the youmu surrounding them. Their adventures will culminate in a battle for survival as the release of Beyond the Boundary, the most potent youmu, approaches.

Kyoukai no Kanata covers the storyline of the first two volumes of the light novel adaptation. It has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks in North America, Hanabee in Australia and Animatsu Entertainment in the United Kingdom. It was also simulcast on Crunchyroll.
