Masaya is a first-grader who is quite large but cries easily, making it difficult for him to walk alone on his way to school at night. His companion on this journey is Akiyo, a second-grader who is small in stature but very capable. Masaya admires and wishes to be as strong as Akiyo. However, one day something happens that leaves Akiyo crying. To lift her spirits, Masaya embarks on a trek to the Ipponsugi forest in search of the spotted bellflowers, which are Akiyo's favorite.
