Anna Sasaki is an asthmatic teenager who lives with her foster parents in a bustling city. She's shy, introverted, and struggles to connect with others due to her condition. Her doctors recommend sending her to the countryside to improve her health and clear her mind. So, Anna moves in with her aunt and uncle in a small town near the sea for the summer. During her stay, she discovers an abandoned mansion called the Marsh House while wandering outside one day. She meets Marnie, a mysterious girl who seems friendly at first but turns out to be more than she appears. As Anna spends time with Marnie, she begins to open up and form a close friendship. However, as her stay in the town comes to an end, Anna starts to uncover the secrets of the Marsh House and the truth about Marnie. Omoide no Marnie is based on Joan G. Robinsons English childrens novel classic When Marnie Was There. The movie was nominated for Animation of the Year at the 38th Japan Academy Prize Awards and Best Animated Feature Film at the 9th Asia Pacific Screen Awards in 2015. The movie won an award for Best Animated Feature Film at the Chicago International Childrens Film Festival in 2015. Other nominations include Best Animated Feature (Independent) at the 43rd Annual Annie Awards and Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 88th Academy Awards in 2016.
