A hundred years after catastrophic shifts in tectonic plates caused most of its area to submerge, Japan is now a thriving maritime nation. The country has developed high-functioning cities along its coasts and well-developed sea routes that are protected by specialized naval ships. The marine industry flourishes, and young girls eagerly join the Blue Mermaids-highly skilled women who dedicate their lives to protecting the seas. Childhood friends Akeno Misaki and Moeka China reunite at Yokosuka Girls Marine High School, where they are joined by others who share their dream of becoming Blue Mermaids. Training exercises begin, with Akeno and Moeka taking charge of their own ships and crew aboard the Harekaze, a destroyer ship. Everything proceeds smoothly for Akeno as she settles into her role as captain and fosters camaraderie among her fellow crew members. However, unexpected engine and navigation failures leave the Harakazes stranded and endanger the crew. The anime series High School Fleet follows the valiant crew of the Harekaze as they navigate treacherous waters and overcome obstacles on their journey to become fully fledged Blue Mermaids.
