In the far reaches of time, humankind has discovered a means of eternal existence through the acquisition of mechanical bodies. However, this pathway to immortality comes with an exorbitant price tag. A destitute young boy named Tetsurou Hoshino yearns to purchase a ticket on the Galaxy Express 999, a train that traverses the cosmos, as it is rumored that those who reach its terminus are granted a free mechanical body. Tragically, Tetsurous mother is killed by the malevolent machine-man hybrid Count Mecha, leaving Tetsurou to face certain death. He is then rescued from the brink of life and death by the enigmatic Maetel, a tall blonde woman with an uncanny resemblance to his mother. In exchange for her assistance, Maetel presents Tetsurou with a pass to the Galaxy Express, but only on one condition: that they travel together throughout the universe. Consequently, Tetsurou embarks on a journey across numerous exotic planets and thrilling escapades in pursuit of obtaining his most cherished desire.
